I looked back at Jiang Wu: “Did you think that by capturing them, you could threaten me?”

“I wasn’t sure.” Jiang Wu casually smirked, “Let’s try it out.” After saying that, he waved his hand, and a person jumped down from the entrance above his head. It was the puppet, Little Short Hair, that he had just condensed with his demonic energy. I saw Little Short Hair touch some unknown switch on the ceiling. The chains holding a cage suddenly dropped, and in the back, an imprisoned Shadow Night Guard plunged down into the abyss together with the cage.

He did not make a sound, because as a Shadow Night Guard, he had been trained to not show fear under any dire situation.

Due to this, his disappearance was nothing more than a muffled crashing sound into the abyss. Right at the same time, the ground flashed with an extremely blinding light.

For a moment, the cave was silent as if death had descended.

“Bastard!” Shi Qi yelled angrily.

Jiang Wu ignored her and just quietly looked at me, as if he was finding it interesting to study my expression: “Do you feel threatened?” In his eyes, killing someone was inherently such an easy thing to do. He was floating in the air, getting a little closer to me, “Lu Zhao Yao, do you know that I can now feel your sky-rocketing anger?”

“Why are you still sprouting all of this nonsense, then?” As my eyes narrowed, I glared at him, “I’ll take your life as compensation.”

After I said that, I used demonic energy to condense a long sword. I sliced the blade across the palm of my hand, offering my blood as a sacrifice. I made a curse spell within the blade, and then slashed towards Jiang Wu. He smiled and moved aside to dodge, just like his actions from before, like he was teasing me.

Unfortunately for him, I was not dealing with him at the moment.

The sword’s murderous aura brushed past Jiang Wu’s shoulder. When the sword met emptiness, it immediately turned around with a sudden thrust, catching Jiang Wu off guard. Jiang Wu’s eyes moved slightly, and the smile at the corners of his mouth had retreated by just a little bit. He unsheathed his sword from its scabbard, barely able to block the energy sword’s reverse attack. I did not give him the slightest chance to rest, I teleported from his back to above his head, aiming at his neck to take his life. At this time, Jiang Wu’s octahedron sword was contending against the energy sword. As I quickly attacked from behind him, his protective barrier flashed, blocking my attack.

I snorted coldly. To give you some face, I was not ruthless with my actions before. Did you really think that I could not break through this rotten enchantment barrier?

As I stabbed the sword against the protective barrier behind his back, I let loose a low growl, and poured all the power in my body into the sword. I did not use any  tricks or fancy moves, I directly met force with force head-on, and the tip of the sword pierced through his red-lighted barrier.

Only a crisp “crack” sound was heard.

While Jiang Wu turned his head slightly, I stabbed the sword into his back towards his heart. He wanted to use the Instantaneous Travel Technique to temporarily leave my side, so I immediately threw a thirty foot enchantment barrier centered around myself.

Jiang Wu was caught unprepared by my barrier. He did not even get a chance to teleport away from me, and his retreat was blocked by my barrier. With such a short amount of time, no matter how powerful his enchantment barrier skills were, he could not solve my barrier in an instant.

I laughed: “Did you think you’re the only one who knows how to use an enchantment barrier?” Without giving him any time to respond, I raised my sword and slashed down towards him. I forced him to retreat off to the side, cutting a sorry figure for himself. However, my sword still slashed down on the long hair at his temple, and immediately drew a line of blood.

Jiang Wu’s eyes hardened: “Lu Zhao Yao…”

In a flash, I used the Instantaneous Travel Technique and landed behind Jiang Wu’s back. I grabbed his neck and swung my sword to his neck: “You entered Jiang Hu at a young age, so you didn’t have a senior to teach you. Today, I’ll teach you a saying — Both the Immortal and Demon Path can get crazy, but you must not provoke Lu Zhao Yao.”

After I said that, I sliced Jiang Wu’s neck with the blade without hesitation. Even though the blade did not cut deep into his skin, blood immediately flowed out of Jiang Wu’s neck. The power around his body wanted to push me away, but I gritted my teeth, determined to withstand the pressure, burying the blade deeper.

However, at this moment, chaotic sounds were emitted from the iron chains high up on the ceiling. I did not turn my head, but used my divine sense to probe. It was the puppet, Little Short Hair, undoing the iron chains of everyone’s cages. More than twenty cages dropped down to the abyss together.

Both the Shadow Night Guards and Qian Chen Pavilion’s disciples were all silent. No one let loose a single cry of panic, only Shi Qi shouted: “Even if I turn into a ghost, I won’t let you get away with this!”

As I clenched my teeth, I struggled with my thoughts for a while. Finally, I released Jiang Wu, no longer entangling with him. I teleported to the bottom of the abyss, coincidentally landing on a large round disk that was emitting light. With a low growl, I threw all the power in my body out at the bottom of the abyss, and caught more than twenty iron cages from falling.

I was just about to lower all of the cages safely onto the ground. However, with the same hand, I held all the cages in mid-air. Then at the same time, with the other hand, I thrust the sword condensed from demonic energy into the center of the shining disk.

      1. I really enjoyed the drama and I wondered why lovers of the novel were upset with how Zhao Yao was represented. Seeing these last few chapters, I see where the drama departed with just how bold and brave she was. In the drama, they made her almost docile after affirming her feelings for Mo Qing. I’ve now read a couple other novels from Jiu Lu Fei Xiang and I see how she loves making flawed but strong female characters. I just hope Back from the Brink based off Heart Protection does not weaken the female character like they did Zhao Yao.

All that to say, I like the Zhao Yao of the books better. I really enjoyed the first maybe 35 episodes of the drama. It had so much potential! Makes me sad to think maybe a lot of it was left on the cutting room floor or didn’t make it through censorship.

  1. I haven’t checked out any new drama recently. So I plan to check out “Back from the Brink,” then. Been mostly watching Disney with the baby. I feel like the ones that pop up on my feed in YouTube are older because I feel like I’ve seen it before.

Yeah, the drama had a lot of potential, but then it fell SHORT! Like you, I enjoyed like the first 40 episodes of Zhao Yao.
